Amorim: ‘Milan cannot have day off, losing must feel like end of the world’ Ruben Amorim explains the kind of ‘mentality’ he wants to always see from inconsistent Milan after their win in Genoa. ‘There is no day off. It’s feeling that losing is the end of the world.’ The Rossoneri remain completely unpredictable, as they have lurched from negative to positive results and back again, repeating the pattern at Marassi. After the midweek round defeat to Bologna, victory over Inter in the Derby della Madonnina and 2-0 Europa League loss to Ferencvaros on Thursday, they again flipped for a 2-1 win away to Genoa. Alphadjo Cisse and Christian Pulisic scored the early goals, hanging on under pressure following the Mikkel Ellertsson deflected strike, to end Genoa’s impressive run of three consecutive victories. (Photo by Simone Arveda/Getty Images) The problem therefore is managing to keep that going more consistently than just once per week, but meanwhile they are in fourth place and only five points off leaders Lazio. “We can win any game, but I cannot tell you we are going to reach this at the end of the season, as I cannot feel the consistency is there yet. I don’t want to say anything more than we are able to win the next game, but then it depends on a lot of things,” added Amorim. “If we have all the players available, we will be better not just in Serie A, but also in Europe. This cycle of games was hard for us because of everything that happened, but I can say that if we are competitive, we can win any game in the league. “So let’s focus on that and go day by day.” ITALY – NOVEMBER 8: Ruben Amorim, head coach of Milan, looks on prior to kick-off in the Serie A match between Genoa CFC and AC Milan at Stadio Luigi Ferraris on November 8, 2026 in Genoa, Italy. (Photo by Simone Arveda/Getty Images) Now Milan go into the break for international duty and hope the injury crisis can calm a little, as they were already missing Strahinja Pavlovic, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Samuel Chukwueze, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pietro Terracciano and Alexis Saelemaekers. The coach had said that Milan were “not ready to be competitive every three days,” and it does seem as if they reserve all their determination, passion and energy for the weekends. What does he mean by competitive? “It’s about the mentality. When you play for Milan, there is no day off. You cannot switch off on Thursday the way we did and then switch back on come Sunday. That is not possible. It’s not going to work,” insisted the coach. “It’s not physical, it’s about having that panic of losing. That does not mean being afraid of losing, it’s feeling that losing is the end of the world. That is the feeling I want in my team, so it depends on that.” ITALY – NOVEMBER 05: Ruben Amorim, Head Coach of AC Milan, looks on before the UEFA Europa League 2026/27 League Phase MD4 match between AC Milan and Ferencvarosi TC at Stadio San Siro on November 05, 2026 in Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Goncalo Ramos was again involved in the build-up to both goals, but does not contribute actual goals or assists. “It’s hard for a striker when he doesn’t score a goal, but we don’t spend a lot of time in the final third. We have a lot of possession, but when we reach the final third more often, Goncalo Ramos is going to score many goals. It is a team problem, the way we play is not helping Ramos, whereas he is helping the team. “It is a process, we need to have Ramos spending 60 per cent of his time in the opponent’s box, and we are not there yet,” concluded Amorim.
