Man United fans unveil new banner with 11-word message in fresh protest against owners
Supporters of Manchester United staged a fresh demonstration against the club's owners ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture with Aston Villa . Green and gold balloons filled the Stretford End before kick-off, colours that look back to the club's past and signal rejection of the present leadership. A new banner was unfurled in the stand which read: “We don’t want a new stadium, we want the owners out”. Chants against the Glazer family and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe rang out as the United players came out of the tunnel in front of the protest. Fans had been urged to walk out in the 21st minute, marking 21 years since the Glazer family's leveraged buyout, but the planned protest came to nothing. Many supporters had already made their feelings plain by that point. Opposition to plans for a new stadium that would replace Old Trafford was also voiced. Several fans groups had called on supporters to make their voices heard during the match. Their protest was directed at a decline in standards and a perceived attack on traditional fan culture. United headed into Sunday’s match in 19th place in the Premier League table after Sunderland beat Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light earlier on Sunday afternoon. Michael Carrick’s side then made a nightmare start to their game against Villa, with Unai Emery’s men scoring twice in the opening four minutes. Alysson and Nicolas Jackson both found the net to put Villa in complete control, only for United to fight back for the second time in five days after their dramatic 3-2 win over Roma on Tuesday. United captain Bruno Fernandes halved the deficit from the penalty spot, before Youri Tielemans equalised just before half time to ensure the hosts headed into the interval on level terms. Villa retook the lead shortly after half time, though, with John McGinn scoring a penalty.
