Michael Carrick has painfully awkward exchange with interviewer over Man United future
Michael Carrick endured an awkward end to a post-match interview as he had an excruciating exchange about his future as Manchester United manager. Carrick had just watched his United side fight back from 4-2 down in injury time to snatch the unlikeliest of 4-4 draws with Aston Villa , having earlier come back from being 2-0 behind inside five minutes. It was a real mixed display from the Red Devils, who showed plenty of heart and character but had put themselves in bad positions due to consistently disastrous defending. The result – combined with their incredible comeback victory against Roma in midweek – has probably saved Carrick’s job, although his United side still head into this international break in the Premier League ’s bottom three, lying 18th in the table. His long-term future appears to very much still be up in the air and his post-match interview on Sky Sports with reporter Patrick Davison was an awkward watch. Carrick firstly bristled slightly when asked if United are looking at a relegation fight, saying: “No, we’re in November. I don’t like this situation we’re in, I don’t like the results we’ve had but we can definitely do something about it.” "That's not going to happen" 🗣️ Michael Carrick responds to the notion that he could resign as Manchester United head coach 🔴 pic.twitter.com/q1fBKSXL7l — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) November 8, 2026 From there, things got worse, as Davison asked a lengthy question suggesting there were clearly going to be conversations about his future during the international break over the next couple of weeks, to which Carrick simply responded: "Is there?" When it was suggested that one would assume so, Carrick tersely said: “Would you?” and when he was pushed for what he thought about his situation, the Man United boss said to Davison: “You’re telling me, what do you think”. After that, the interviewer specified that he wanted to know what Carrick expected to happen in the next couple of weeks and he then gave a longer answer admitting that it wasn’t a good situation, the team haven’t won enough games but that he expects to move forward and keep working on the things they’ve been working on until this point. Michael Carrick (Reuters) Back in the Sky Sports studio, pundit Roy Keane was asked for his thoughts on the interview as a whole and the former Man United captain compared the current boss to a politician. He said: “It’s obviously difficult for the manager, he’s under pressure no doubt. He talks a lot but doesn’t say much – maybe that’s a tactic. He’s like a politician. “He’s clearly under pressure and says he knows there are things to work on but he better get moving on that... This is their worst start in however many years.”
